The Centre is located in the town of Basovizza, in the
heart of the Karst area. This structure of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is dedicated to
environmental education, focusing specifically on knowledge of the plants, animals and ecosystems of the Karst and of the Region.
The space is home to
permanent exhibits on the naturalistic and cultural aspects of the Karst area of Trieste. It explores topics such as
biodiversity, eco-sustainability and the relationship between humankind and the forests of the Region. Everything is presented using
state-of-the-art information technology, developed through an experimental approach. All the exhibits and activities are available in Italian, English and Slovenian.
In the mid-19th century, the centre was used as a nursery for the production of tens of
millions of black pine seedlings, which were then used for the reforestation of the Karst, which had been reduced to bare rock as a result of excessive deforestation and grazing. Once the karst had been reforested, the centre was turned into a Nature Education Centre in the 1990s. In 2006, the building was renovated and upgraded.
Several easy hikes are open to visitors in the area surrounding the centre, such as the
Ressel Trail. Another interesting excursion is to visit the
Foiba of Basovizza and the
Monument to the Fallen Anti-Fascists.
The centre is open by appointment only for schools or groups of at least 15 people.
