Nestled in a small doline on the Karst in Trieste, the
Black Cave earned its name due to its post-war purpose of
disposing of remnants of munitions and explosives. The walls of the cave turned black from the fumes of the blasts.
Some written sources mention the cave as a place where
ice was deposited around the middle of the 19th century.
Today the cave is part of the
Eliseo Osualdini Educational Centre, an underground classroom where four sites have been reconstructed to illustrate prehistoric human life in the Karst area of Trieste.
