Bicycle touring route among the sea, olive trees and vineyards, from Trieste or Muggia to Koper (Koper), the heart of Slovenian Istria.
A journey through nature, culture and tradition.
This bicycle touring loop can start at the Trieste train station, with a crossing of the city center, or at the Bersaglieri pier, where you can take the ferry to Muggia and admire the city from the sea. Muggia, a picturesque seaside town, offers glimpses of the blue Gulf and a Venetian atmosphere visible in its architecture, customs, Istro-Venetian dialect, and culinary traditions. The ride continues along the coast, crossing the Lazzaretto and the border with Slovenia, with the sea always on the right. The landscape changes with olive groves and vineyards as we reach Ankaran (Ankaran) and then Koper (Koper), the largest urban center in Slovenian Istria. The route continues to Škofije (Scoffie) and the Rabuiese pass, from where you return to Italy. The landscape varies with each stretch. The arrival in Muggia concludes the loop, with the possibility of returning to Trieste by ferry.
The Trieste-Muggia section is bikeable, but we recommend taking the ferry to avoid city traffic, especially in summer.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Almost completely paved route, much of it on bike path. Busy section between the industrial area of Trieste and Muggia and between the I/SLO border of S. Bartolomeo and Ancarano.
Mostly flat route but with several undemanding ups and downs in the border hills between Italy and Slovenia.
Public-transport-friendly
Trieste can be reached by public transportation. Once at the train station, it is possible to pedal to Muggia. For those who wish to avoid urbanized areas, you can pedal along the waterfront on the bike path until you reach the Bersaglieri pier where you can take the ferry. The bike+boat service operates year-round. See https://tplfvg.it/it/il-viaggio/servizi-marittimi/
