The small plain that stretches between Ospedaletto di Gemona, Osoppo and the hills of Buja was formed by the glacial moraines and post-glacial debris of the Tagliamento river, which filled a deep tectonic trench created by the uplift of the Carnic Alps.

We set off from Artegna to reach the medieval town of Gemona del Friuli along the ancient Roman road. On the way, we pass through Osoppo, with its fort overlooking the Tagliamento River. The hill can be reached by bicycle with a demanding climb. Leaving the town we enter the magical place of the Bars springs, a protected nature area characterised by crystal-clear water and a rich orchid bloom in spring. We proceed in the direction of Buia, passing through its rich villages characterised by water channels such as the Ledra, on whose banks we find ancient mills and wash-houses. After leaving Buja we continue in the direction of Artegna, along the plain.

    Author’s recommendation

Type of track: a predominantly flat route, with only two short, gentle climbs at Gemona and Buja. The entire itinerary includes 7 km of very good gravel, but this makes it somewhat unfavourable for road bikes. The route follows secondary roads, generally with limited traffic.
