The Adriatic Sea Cycleway runs from Trieste to Lignano Sabbiadoro and is the section in Friuli Venezia Giulia of the Adriabike (Trieste-Venice) and EuroVelo8.
The Karst presents natural and environmental features that are unique in Europe, clearly evident in the park within the Rosandra Valley, in the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), and the botanical garden known as the "Carsiana", as well as along the Rilke Trail. Travelling along the Coast Road, spectacular views of the Gulf of Trieste can be admired in all its turquoise beauty, with the Dolomites and Carnic Pre-Alps as a backdrop. At Sistiana visitors will experience the natural wonders of the cliffed coast of the Duino nature reserve with a short stop at the entrance to the Rilke path. From Monfalcone, the journey permeates the country setting of the Lower Plain, rich with countless waterways. This is where the Roman remains of Aquileia emerge, surrounded by the coastal landscape of the Lagoon of Grado and Marano. A visit to the well-known regional seaside resorts of Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro and the fishing port of Marano Lagunare is a must. The many protected nature reserves and nature oases that are located along the way (the Isonzo Mouth, Cavanata Valley, Canal Novo Valley and the Stella Mouth) will provide nature lovers with the opportunity of appreciating the environmental and birdlife characteristics of the Lagoon.
Tasting the local seafood, shellfish and crustaceans in a restaurant along this route is practically... unavoidable! Every town and village you will travel through features special dishes with a variety of recipes, beautifully paired with white wines from the many local DOC appellations. Trieste and the Karst, thanks to their centuries-old Mitteleuropean culture, boast a multitude of flavours and culinary traditions: Slovenian customs blend and combine with Austro-Hungarian traditions, with pleasant overtones from the cuisine of Friuli and Veneto.
