The Alpe Adria cycling route is the best-known cycle touring route of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It starts from Salzburg (A) and after 400 km reaches Grado.
The itinerary starts in Italy at Tarvisio and was partly built on disused railway tracks. It crosses the entire region from north to south, thus offering a vast compendium of natural, urban, and cultural environments. It begins with the valleys and peaks of the Julian and Carnic Alps, follows the Fella and Tagliamento rivers, glides through the moraine hills before facing the Friulian Plain, finally reaching the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea. It is an encyclopedic itinerary, where the landscapes change quickly and cultural spaces, history, traditions, and languages also change. It passes through places of great historical importance such as Gemona del Friuli and Udine, the UNESCO sites of Palmanova and Aquileia; it goes through characteristic medieval villages like Malborghetto, Venzone, and Strassoldo. From July 13, 2024, you cycle along the route of the old railway line to Carnia train station, not far from Venzone. There are still a couple of kilometers to pedal on a regional road with a wide shoulder before reaching the historic center of Venzone. From November to April each year the Alpe Adria cycling route is closed from Tarvisio to Venzone.
Type of route: mainly linear route, mostly downhill or flat, with very few cycling difficulties. Mostly on cycle paths or secondary paved roads without traffic; several sections on good gravel roads.
From Tarvisio southwards through Pontebba, Venzone, Gemona del Friuli, Udine, Palmanova, Aquileia, and Grado.

Il treno MICOTRA è un convoglio speciale internazionale e intermodale tra Udine e Villach (A) e può portare oltre 70 biciclette in vagoni appositi (prenotazione obbligatoria). Effettua due corse giornaliere in andata e ritorno e in estate prolunga la sua corsa fino a Gorizia e Trieste.
Prenotazione obbligatoria gratuita sul treno Mi.Co.Tra Udine / Trieste - Villach. Da 2024 è obbligatoria la prenotazione per le biciclette ed il contestuale acquisto del biglietto bici, esclusivamente accedendo al sito https://www.obb-italia.com/it/ o tramite APP. Esclusivamente per le tratte in Friuli Venezia Giulia si segnala che, per procedere con la prenotazione della bicicletta, è necessario deselezionare il passeggero, che il sistema inserisce in automatico, ed attivare la sola selezione della bicicletta. La tariffa bicicletta è pari a € 1,70 in Friuli Venezia Giulia e ha validità a tratta e non validità giornaliera.
Grado invece è servita dal BiciBus, pullman con al traino un carrello chiuso per 40 biciclette, che fa servizio in primavera ed estate sulla tratta Udine-Palmanova-Cervignano-Grado con diverse corse nei week-end; in luglio e agosto le corse sono giornaliere.
