Biacis, Raccaro House (Museum of Natural Health)

[19th century]

Casa Raccaro is a rural house with a porch and balcony overlooking the inner courtyard. The date 1821 is engraved on the pillar, possibly referring to its construction period. Restored while preserving its original elements, it was inaugurated on the 10th April 2014, as part of the European project ZborZbirk – Cultural Heritage in Collections between the Alps and Carso. It now hosts an ethnographic museum and a space for meetings and events. On the first floor, traditional carnival masks from the valleys are displayed, one of the most significant celebrations: the blumari of Montefosca, the devil and angel of Rodda, the rooster and hen (le liepe) of Mersino, and the colorful pustje with retractable tongs and cowbells announcing the arrival of the masks. All costumes are still handmade using leftover fabrics and cut paper. The costumes of the koledniki (who collect gifts from house-to-house on the last day of the year in Cicigolis) and the itinerants of Mersino, active during the Christmas novena, are also exhibited.
Other rooms showcase the ancient trades: the carpenter's or blacksmith's workshop, with settings for tools and work instruments. A 15th-century inn has been reconstructed, with services and hospitality, the spartan accomodation, and modest food of the time.
The museum highlights the customs and traditions of the people of the valleys, the village, and the surrounding areas rich in charm and history.
