Two precious gems lying at the foot of the mighty Mangart wall
The morphology of the Fusine lakes and the valley below clearly denote their glacial origin, constituting one of the best known mountain landscapes in the region. In fact, the Fusine basin is home to two striking moraine lakes formed during the ice retreat phase (about 15,000-16,000 years ago). The majestic northern faces of Mount Mangart and the Ponze are reflected in the waters of the two small lakes. Winter temperatures are exceptionally cold as the moist southern currents are impeded in their northward motion by the Mangart chain.
