Leaving the Piancavallo infopoint turn right on Via Barcis to Hotel 1301 Inn. Near the hotel take the service road that runs alongside the soccer fields and continue to the Casera Capovilla. Take the Sorgente del Tornidor CAI 925 trail following the red-and-white markings.

Once past the spring, the path crosses meadows rich in rare floral varieties including: asphodel, Lilium carniolicum, golden lily, martagon, edelweiss and orchids of the most diverse species. Once you reach the woods beside the stream, you will encounter a short passage equipped with a cable that requires attention. The ascent is challenging and the slope decreases only for short stretches. Continuing uphill, a stupendous panoramic view opens up to the south, with the eastern slope of Val Grande (Caulana and Colosser Mountains) being home to a rich community of chamois in the area.

Reaching the Forcella Val Grande from which there are splendid views of the wild glacial Sperlonga Valley, the most challenging part of the trail ends. Continue along CAI 925 through a wide glacial basin where wells of karst origin are visible where snow is preserved all year round. Ptarmigan reigns in this area. Passing the Semenza bivouac, you quickly reach the refuge, around which there is the rare silver geranium.

Continue along CAI path 923. Along the first downhill section, near overhanging rocks, you can see the splendid rock raponzolo. Continue on a steep bottom to Sasso della Madonna. Take CAI 922 on the left to Casera Palantina. From this point leave CAI 922 and continue on CAI 993 through an almost flat route amidst the forest of impressive beech and fir trees. With a short but steep ascent you will reach Baita Arneri at altitude. Leave CAI 993 and descend along the service path below the Tremol 1 chairlift.

Follow the white-red signs until you find CAI path 924 and the Casera Capovilla. Return to Via Barcis skirting the sports facilities and finally to Piazzale della Puppa.

    Safety information

This route requires good physical preparation. Technically, the exposed sections are limited and short. However, the ascent of Val Grande and the length make the route challenging.

Presence of some support and refreshment points along the route; it is recommended to check in advance period and opening times of facilities such as shelters and huts along the route.

    Tips and suggestions

From a wildlife point of view: the eastern side of Val Grande is formed by the impervious slopes of the Caulana and Colosser mountains and is home to the largest community of chamois in the area, with about fifty sighted specimens. In the upper part of the valley it is possible to see mouflon, deer and, in some very rare cases, bear.
