A simple and short path starts from Pian della Sega, where during World War I there was a building used as a infirmary, of which the ruins are still visible. The trail rises through a beautiful beech forest and reaches the spectacular waterfall in just a few minutes.
Its origin is rooted in the geological nature of the area: the massif of Mount Canin is made up of permeable limestone at the summit, resting on a base of semi-permeable dolomite rocks. This situation causes the waters that infiltrate the depths of the karst plateau to re-emerge when they encounter the dolomite rocks, creating the enchanting Fontanon di Goriuda. A hundred meters above the waterfall, the small stream flows from a cave that can be visited with a speleological guide in complete safety.
At the base of the waterfall, there is a small crystalline lake from which the stream flows, forming another series of small but picturesque cascades that complete the visit.
The Natural Park of the Julian Prealps organizes guided speleological visits inside the Fontanon di Goriuda Cave during the summer. Follow the Park's social profiles to discover the dates.
A visit in autumn is recommended to enjoy the beech forest's foliage.
In colder winters, the waterfall can freeze completely, making the environment even more enchanting. If considering a winter visit, it’s advisable to use micro-spikes or, even better, crampons due to the abundant presence of ice on the ground.

In case of emergencies, the number to call is 112 (Emergency Number).
Ticks are common in the area, so it's advised to learn about prevention and protection techniques: Tick information brochure for the FVG region (italian only).
The trail is not recommended after heavy rainfall, as some sections may be slippery.
Bring crampons or micro-spikes if you are considering a winter visit.
Please carry out all waste and strive to preserve the places you pass through as best as possible.
Please note that collecting plant species or parts thereof is prohibited within the Natural Park and may be subject to constraints under L.R. 7/2009 in external areas. You can consult the list of protected species at this link (italian only).
Remember that dogs must be kept on a leash within protected areas.
