U-Kaverne and MG-Kaverne

Just before closing the green ring near the riverbed of the Saisera creek two more caves are visible dug in another two erratic boulders: U-Kaverne and the MG-Kaverne.

The first one was built in 1916 and was used as a shelter. The name came from the shape of its tunnel, in a "U", to allow the soldiers to escape in case of a collapse of the main entrance. This was in the upper part of the cave while the exit, further down, was protected by a door. Furthermore, these passages were directly connected to the wooden shelter where the troops lived.
MG Kaverne instead held the two Schwarzlose machine guns M.07/12 that pointed directly on the course of the Saisera creek. Compared to the "U-Kaverne", this has narrower spaces: the height of the corridors makes it impossible to stand up in and so the soldiers who operated the machine guns were sitting. On the peak of the boulder, a trench was dug out to be able to better observe the movement of Italian troops, while opposite a shielded post had been built for close-up defence. Furthermore, this tunnel was connected directly to the"Sasso Bucato" by a trench that skirted the bed of the creek.

To the left of the entrance, a small votive niche was built with the effigy of the Madonna of Lussari and dated: September 16, 1915. On that day the Italian army bombed Valbruna and the Sanctuary of Lussari with their artillery positioned in Val Dogna, believing that inside the sacred building there was an Austro-Hungarian observatory
