Arcano Castle

The castle of Arcano, inhabited and well-conserved, has great appeal because of its picturesque and somewhat isolated setting.

The upper castle in Arcano was originally erected near the little church of San Mauro, on the bank of the river Corno.

For defensive and strategic purposes, it was later rebuilt in the place where now is situated and it was probably enlarged in the late 13th century.

It is certain that since the 12th century belonged to the Tricanos' family, marshals and hereditary gonfaloniers of the Patriarch of Aquileia.

The castle still preserves its charming medieval character, with Guelph-styled crenellations, an original double tower with gates and a powerful keep decorated with a row of elegant late Romanesque two-light windows on top.

Inside there is a room frescoed by Andrea Urbani and several rooms with fireplaces and portals built by Raffaello de' Raffaelli.

A curious aspect
In the 17th century the castle of Arcano was the scene of a tragic event when Francesco d'Arcano, in a jealousy's rage, beat and killed his wife, whose remains were recovered from a wall during 20th century restoration work.

Activities
For wine lovers: close to the castle is located a biological firm that produces wine and oil.
