Church of Santa Maria in Monte
The votive Church of Santa Maria in Monte in Fogliano Redipuglia was erected in 1521 by Captain Teodorico Trivulzio da Borgomanero. Above the entrance portal, an inscription refers to the vow that led to its building.
Inside one can admire some of the most significant sixteenth-century frescoes of the province of Gorizia. The most ancient ones, which date back to the time of construction, are: the three panels with the Saints, the Virgin with the Child and the Apostles frescoed in the lower part of the apse; the most recent ones, which date back to 1572, are frescoed in the sub-arch and attributed to painter Giacomo Secante from Udine.
The church was erected at the centre of a Venetian military building; the garden that surrounds the building is still bounded by a star-shaped wall, in some parts still original, erected by Commander Antonio Priuli during the Wars of Gradisca between Venice and the Empire.
You can see the church upon appointment
