Udine's Castle rises up on a hill that dominates the old centre. In the past it was the headquarters of patriarchs and Venetian lieutenants and now hosts some of the city museums.
The Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Risorgimento have an entirely new layout enhanced by film clips and multimedia aids. The Gallery of Ancient Art exhibits a homogeneous collection of works created for the most part by local and Venetian artists from the second half of the XIV century to the first half of the XIX century. The Museum of Photography preserves images of photographers working on site in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
