Vajont

Vajont is situated on the tectonic terrace that dominates the left bank of the Cellina river and is the youngest municipality in the province of Pordenone.

It was born around the end of the 1960s, after the Vajont tragedy (1963), which led the government to evacuate the valley of the homonymous lake due to the fear of further landslides and, therefore, of other victims among the inhabitants of Erto and Casso.

The urban design of the location was carried out by Prof. Giuseppe Samonà, from the School of Architecture of the University of Venice, as an example of a modern village in the plain, where some fundamental characteristics of the mountain area have been re-created starting from the wide green spaces.

Equipped with suitable social facilities, the town has become populated also thanks to the arrival of inhabitants from areas other than the Vajont valley.

Today it even features an international community, thanks to the presence of many American civilians and soldiers at the base of Aviano.

The municipality of Vajont was the co-producer of the homonymous film by Renzo Martinelli. Many scenes of the film "Come Dio comanda" by Gabriele Salvatores were shot in the municipality.
