San Pier d'Isonzo

San Pier d'Isonzo

Inhabited since the Roman times, San Pier d'Isonzo bears its name from its ancient Pieve, dedicated to Saint Peter.

The ancient village, placed in the countryside of Aquileia, after being subjected to the Patriarchal domination, was later occupied by the Republic of Venice till 1257 when it turned back again under the Patriarchs.

In the past it had always been a very important area due strategic reasons: many armies used its ferries to cross the river Isonzo.

The church completed in the second half of the eighteenth century, it was damaged by the First World War and it was restored after 1920, when the bell tower was rebuilt.
