San Giorgio della Richinvelda
The municipality of San Giorgio della Richinvelda comprises the hamlets of Aurava, Cosa, Domanins, Pozzo, Provesano and Rauscedo, the latter being famous all over the world for its vine shoot production.
The toponym San Giorgio della Richinvelda combines two important historical elements, which prove the town's ancient origin: San Giorgio was the old parish, one of the largest in the diocese of Concordia; Rinchivelda may derive from the Lombard "wood of Arichis".
The Richinvelda is sadly famous for the tragic bloody event of 1350: the killing, by some rebel Friulians, of wise ninety-year-old Patriarch Bertrando from San Genesio and of his escort.
A stone indicates the exact place, whereas the wounded man was taken to die in the cemetery of the near St. Nicholas' church (this event is solemnly recalled on the first Sunday of July with a ceremony in the sacristy).
Roman finds (Domanins) and praedial toponyms (Provesano: from Publicius or Probus) demonstrate the ancientness of the settlement on the Roman road that followed the course of the Tagliamento.
