Pontebba

Pontebba, situated in the Tarvisio mountain area, is an important town of Valcanale, inhabited already in the Roman age.

Until the First World War the border between Italy and Austria passed through Pontebba: on the old maps one can still read the ancient names Venetian Pontebba, Italian Pontebba and Pontafel to indicate the Carinthian part.

Very interesting is the Parish Church of St. Mary Major that preserves the wonderful wooden altar (Flügelaltar) of 1517, with carved, painted and gilded parts and other parts that are only painted with sacred scenes.

From Pontebba one can leave to the discovery of enchanting mountain valleys and follow pleasant trekking routes. In winter, the ski facilities of the Tarvisio area can be reached in a short time.

Ice-skating enthusiasts will enjoy the Ice-skating Rink open also some weeks in summer.
