Majano
Majano
Evidence of the Roman origin of the town is provided by the several finds dating back to that age and by the toponym that derives from praedium majani, a rich estate of the Majania family. The Lombard raids, too, left some traces in these lands; in the locality of S. Salvatore, in fact, a remarkable Lombard necropolis, consisting of 83 tombs and objects of great historical and artistic value, has been brought to light.
The Parish Church, built between 1768 and 1780 according to the design by Domenico Schiavi from Tolmezzo and frescoed by Antonio Schiavi, was pulled down with the adjoining bell tower. It was replaced by a modern building designed by Oliviero Accosano, Eugenio Boranga, Tito De Biasio and Armando Pinellini.
Among the modern buildings we would like to mention the extremely charming Snaidero Industrial Complex by Angelo Mangiarotti (1975-78), the "Enrico Fermi" Study Centre by Luisa Anversa, Maria Angelini and Giacomo D'Ardia (1977-80) and the Mobilsnaidero Showroom by Bruno Nutta and Alessandro Vittorio (1978-79).
The place richest in historical memories is in S. Tomaso, the Romanesque Church of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which was probably built in the first years of life of the hospital (founded in 1199) of which it was part. It features a gabled façade, of stone with a bell gable; it preserves traces of thirteenth-century frescoes, among which a stylized St. Christopher on the right side.
In St. George's Church, in S. Tomaso, too, fourteenth-century frescoes brought to life after the earthquake (interesting "portraits" in the episode of St. George entering Seleucia).
In Susans, seventeenth-century Castle (yet founded in the 16th century), which recalls the Tuscan medieval castles, of rectangular plan with squat angular squares unique in Friuli; it is being renovated.
The Parish Church preserves two altars, which until 1976 were in the Parish Church of Majano: hanging on the walls, two eighteenth-century altarpieces, one depicting Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saints Anthony the Great, Aloysius Gonzaga and Florian, the other Saints Valentine, Apollonia and Lucy.
