Castelnovo del Friuli

The 1976 earthquake destroyed most of the environmental, architectural and artistic heritage of the municipality of Castelnovo: the evidence of much rural architecture, which had preserved in an optimal way for two centuries and was one of the main attractions of the area due to the perfect correspondence of the houses to the inhabitants' needs and due to their relationship with the environment that surrounded them, has disappeared.

There is no town with this name, but only about forty different villages (among which Almadis, Celate di Castelnovo, Costa, Molevana, Mostacins, Oltrerugo, Paludea, Praforte, Vidunza, Vigna, etc.) linked by about thirty kilometres of asphalt roads and by ancient paths among large woods, spring waters for fishermen, the course of the Cosa river, cultivations and vineyards; for centuries the latter have produced wines for connoisseurs, such as the fruity white wines "Ucelùt" and "Sgjalin", the full-bodied red wines "Piculit neri" and "Forgiarin" and the dessert wine "Fragulìn".
