Clapat Islet

Along the Tagliamento River, between the key Pinzano and Braulins Bridges (between Gemona del Friuli and Trasaghis), on a secondary road, you can see the Cornino Bridge, split in two by the Clapat Islet. This passageway connects the area of Majano with Forgaria and was the setting of a significant event during the days of the Italian retreat, following the defeat of Caporetto.
On this strip of land in the middle of the river, in fact, the Genoa and Syracuse Brigades organised a defensive line to protect the rearguard. The Bosnian infantry regiment reached the islet on the eve of 02nd November 1917 and overtook it two days later after a fierce battle. After this, the Italian Supreme Commander reconsidered its project of resisting along this line for as long as possible and the soldiers were forced to quickly reorganise a new front along the Piave River.

Due to the urgency with which the Italians organised themselves to block the enemy advance, there are no remains left. Nevertheless, the two days of resistance are commemorated here by a memorial stone dedicated to the above brigades that strenuously fought here. To see it, you need to walk 350 metres from the beginning of the bridge and take the only dirt road descending to the islet on the left.
