Church of San Rocco

Forgaria del Friuli is a town nestled between the Tagliamento River and the foothills of the Carnic Pre-Alps. It is an ideal location for family excursions in the middle of nature: easy strolls along mule tracks lead to the discovery of the plateau of Mt. Prat, while birdwatchers can spot griffins in the natural reserve of Cornino Lake.

Its streets are home to a number of Great War remains, such as the Church of San Rocco on the climb leading to the summit of Mt. Prat. In early November 1917, the Lombardy Brigade slowed down its retreat and tried to block the advance of the Austro-Germans in Friuli. The church was converted in a resistance and command post. This is why the 55th Infantry Division of the Habsburg Army bombed and destroyed it completely, killing several soldiers, including Major Giovanni Matera.
