Monument on the Summit

Following CAI trail No.413, the next stop along the open-air Museum of Mt. Freikofel is the mountain top, at 1757 metres ASL. Here, you can immediately spot some remains of trenches and tunnels and a memorial consisting of a base of carved stones supporting a black and white granite column. Two commemorative plaques have been affixed on the base, while the sides hold the Italian and Austrian flags marking its limits.

The Memorial dates back to the 1920's and was installed by the Alpine Corps Tolmezzo Battalion following orders from the former Ministry of War. It was a symbolic way to commemorate some places of the Great War that had not been included in the 1922 Royal Decree on Monumental Areas.
