Memorial of the 4th Honved Regiment

The Memorial of the 4th Honved Regiment was erected by the Hungarian troops in autumn 1917, following the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo. If you intend to visit it, head to the town cemetery from the village, past the ruins of the "Diruta Church", or descend directly from the open-air museum route.

The memorial was built to honour the Hungarian infantrymen who fought against the Italian Army here during the first six battles of the Isonzo. It is a truncated pyramid built with the stones of the church nearby, later destroyed by the troops of the Third Army as it was thought to be an observatory post of the Austro-Hungarian army. The stones used to be engraved with a number of circles touching each other, a typical pattern of Hungarian memorials.

The monument you can see now is just a replica, rebuilt by the local Alpine Corps Association in 1993, after years of total abandonment and decay.
