The first option offered by the Monfalcone Theme Park of the Great War is the Fortification (Ridotta) of Height 121. This is the highest point of the Karst, offering wonderful views of both Slovenia and the Friuli plain and Adriatic Sea. In summer 1915, it was transformed into one of the bastions of the Austro-Hungarian defensive line and it rejected all attacks of the Third Army until August 1916 (Sixth battle of the Isonzo). Once under the Italian control, Height 121 became the new front line against enemy lines located on Height 77 and around Pietrarossa Lake.
Today we can observe and walk through some remains that constitute a vivid memory of those events. The trench system is punctuated by several machine-gun pits and caves used as natural shelters. Most of these fortifications were built by the Italian soldiers during their occupation by using existing Austro-Hungarian trenches. Along the itinerary, you can still read a number of so-called "war inscriptions", that is writings left by Italian soldiers who stationed here to reinforce and defend the trench.
