Height 77

Although not included in the Monfalcone Theme Park of the Great War, the visit can be completed with a pleasant walk to Height 77, near Sablici, a small hamlet of Doberdò del Lago. This height became the main defensive post of the Austro-Hungarians near the sea after they were defeated in the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo.

Immediately converted to military purposes, Height 77 was kept like that until May 1917 (Tenth Battle of the Isonzo). The Austro-Hungarians (and the Italians later) dug deep trenches, turned caves into housing and reserves and built positions for machine-guns and grenade launchers, which can still be seen today.

Right here, during one of the several battles between the two armies, Antonio Sant'Elia, a prominent architect and key member of the Futurist movement in architecture, lost his life.
