This stage is centred on the key areas involved in what is known as the "Breakthtough of Kobarid", one of the most significant events of the First World War, which is also well-known worldwide and has left a permanent mark on the memory of the nations that were directly involved. The Twelfth and final Battle of the Isonzo, also known as the Battle of Kobarid, witnessed, after gruelling years of warfare, the retreat of the Italian troops from the advancing Austro-Germanic Army, which, managed to reshape the front lines, moving them rapidly back to the area of the Piave River. Today, the town of Kobarid and the surrounding mountains are the guardians of the traces and testimonies imprinted in their stunning natural surroundings. This memory is also preserved in the monuments and museums that have been established in this territory.
