The “Cammino delle Pievi” of Carnia in Paularo
Some of the most important places of worship and Sentuaries in the valley represent some of the most siggestible points of interest of the Cammino delle Pievi Nature, history and spirituality in Carnia: the Cammino delle Pievi. There are two Stages that cross Paularo and Val d’Incarojo and lead the walker to discover unexpected testimonies of local art.
Church of San Vito
The parish church was built in 1772 to a design by Domenico schiavi and later completed in the last century. Its interior is decorated with frescoes by Antonio Schiavi and paintings by Francesco Pillizzotti, a follower of Nicola Grassi. The ceiling depicts a Virgin in Glory among patron saints, while on the four concave pillars delimiting the elegant and well-proportioned hall, the Sacrifice of Melchizedek, the Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Adoration of the Magi are represented. The main altar, in white marble, is due to the munificence of Jacopo Linussio towards his hometown and was executed in 1747.
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Dierico
In the hamlet of Dierico stands the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The bell tower, complete with spire, was built in 1577. The interior of the church features frescoes with scenes from the Old and New Testaments painted in the 16th century by Giulio Urbanis, a pupil of Pomponio Amalteo. The most interesting work is the splendid wooden altar located in the centre of the apse. It is the work of Antonio Tirone and dates back to 1522. The painted and gilded altar, based on Renaissance canons, features figures of saints and saints on three urns of niches with the Madonna and Child, St George and the Dragon in the centre and the Redeemer at the top.
Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso at Castoia, Salino
The chapel dedicated to the Madonna SS. Ausiliatrice is a pilgrimage destination every 24 May and was built at the end of the 19th century (1870). In 1810, following a flood of the Malmidili stream that descends from Mount Castoia, a boulder was found at the edge of the mountain on which an image of a Madonna with a child on her knees was engraved. The boulder was used to erect a purpose-built capital on the exact spot where the sanctuary altar stands today.
