This is the most evocative of the new nature trails marked in the area and has made accessible zones that were once frequented only by local hunters. Solitary, sunny, very varied and, apart from a short section, not tiring. From the silence of the woods, interrupted only by the babbling of the waters of Rio Puiche, you will suddenly find yourself on a splendid panoramic terrace overlooking the entire Valle del Sole and the mountains that frame it to the south. And it doesn't end there: just beyond is a very singular secluded, flat small valley, the undisputed realm of marmots, which precedes the actual pass where you will find a table with a bench and especially beautiful views over the Olbe plateau, Monte Ferro, the towers of Righile, Chiadènis and even the distant Antelao.

This excursion can already be considered as a destination in itself for the uniqueness of the environments it crosses, but it can also serve as a starting point for other excursions: Monte della Piana from the east (see itinerary 22), Rifugio 2000 (see below), Olbe lakes (see itinerary 25 in the Walks section).

    DIFFICULTY SCALE

The technical sheet of each itinerary shows the abbreviations commonly used in mountain guides (T- E - EE- EEA - A). Some routes may have a double abbreviation (e.g., T/E or E/EE) because they possess characteristics of both categories

T (touristic) indicates generally short and easy routes that take place on forest roads and/or well-marked or visible paths, requiring no particular training

E (hiking) indicates routes, sometimes quite long, on mule tracks and/or paths often above 2000 meters, visible but not always with route markings. They have no significant difficulties but can occasionally present some exposed or awkward sections. Appropriate equipment, some experience, and training are required

EE (for experienced hikers) indicates routes generally above 2000 meters, possibly on unstable terrain and/or in difficult areas, often characterized by exposed and/or equipped sections, occasionally on rocks with difficulties of grade 1. They require experience, sure-footedness, sense of orientation, good equipment, and psycho-physical preparation.

EEA (for experienced hikers with equipment) indicates routes equipped with metal cables, brackets, ladders. Exposure is almost always constant. Experience, training, and suitable equipment including helmet and via ferrata set are mandatory. Gloves are useful.

A (for mountaineers) indicates rock routes leading to summits with low mountaineering difficulties (1st/2nd grade). They require technical skills, good experience, physical preparation, suitable equipment (helmet, some cords, always useful a piece of rope 20-30 meters long)

    Tips and suggestions

    WARNINGS

    • The following information cannot replace the presence of a professional mountain guide
    • The mountain is a wonderful environment but not free from risks, so it must always be approached with the utmost caution
    • In the Warnings of the Guides of the Mountains of Italy C.A.I./T.C.I. it is stated that the classification of difficulties "remains essentially indicative and must be considered as such", as it is a subjective element. This also applies to the itineraries proposed on the site
    • The classification of difficulties and the times of travel refer to an average-level hiker/alpinist in terms of training, experience, skills, fitness
    • When undertaking a particular route, carefully assess the difficulties, your abilities, and your level of training
    • Before setting out on an itinerary (except a short walk) it is good practice to: 1) consult the Dolomiti Meteo of Arpav, by connecting to the website http://www.arpa.veneto.it or calling 049 8239399 (Option 2). The bulletin, unlike national weather bulletins, offers a fairly reliable local forecast. 2) get information from the Tourist Office, the local section of the C.A.I., alpine guides, refuge managers. Indeed, the passability state of an itinerary and its difficulty level may undergo significant changes within a very short time due to natural events (landslides, unfavorable weather conditions) and/or contingencies (deterioration of signs, fixed equipment, presence of residual snowfields, etc.)
    • Mobile phones can give a false sense of security because some areas have no phone coverage
    • In the unfortunate case of accident, illness, or inability to continue, contact only and exclusively SUEM 118

    Roadbook

Follow itinerary 21 until the fork. Here, leaving on the left the path 140 heading to Rifugio 2000, continue along the track initially almost flat which goes straight and then descends slightly to the Rio Puiche, cross it and climb back up steep switchbacks the wooded ridge opposite. At its summit is the splendid balcony mentioned above (equipped with a protective railing and bench, partly damaged by an avalanche), an excellent viewpoint and ideal resting spot. From here go ahead first on a false flat among sparse woods, then with some ups and downs towards northeast passing almost below Monte della Piana with some somewhat exposed passages up to the curious completely flat small valley. Cross it keeping to the left, west, (be careful as in this stretch the yellow markings are absent) until the Passo della Piana where there is a rustic table with bench and, a short distance away, a sign on a post reading "Monte della Piana Nature Trail".

    Return

The return to the valley can be done by the ascent route. However, this route appears more advisable: from the pass continue left (west) along the evident dirt road which soon leads to the ski slope. Here follow it uphill to Rifugio 2000 (about 50 meters of elevation gain) and from there return via itinerary 21 in the opposite direction to the Piani di Gront, from which either along the ski slope or deviating from it towards Miravalle and then with itinerary 13 (from the Walks section) in the opposite direction to Sappada Borgata Mühlbach, taking in total 1.45-2.00 hours.

Also note the following option, although less interesting than the previous one: from Passo della Piana continue left (west) along the evident dirt road which soon leads to the ski slope and descend on it to Rifugio Gosse (upper station of the 2nd section of the chairlift, closed in the summer season) from which with itinerary 25 in the opposite direction to Sappada taking a total of 2.00-2.15 hours.
