Monte Festa, located in the Carnic Prealps between the lake of Cavazzo and the Tagliamento river, hosts a military fort built between 1910 and 1914, one of the most significant works of the Great War in Friuli Venezia Giulia. During the route, you can explore the history of the fort through informative panels and visit the ruins of barracks, battlements, and ammunition depots. This fort, designed to reinforce Italy's eastern border, played a crucial role after the defeat at Caporetto, blocking the Austro-German advance thanks to the effective command of Captain Riccardo Noel Winderling. The fort had eight long-range cannons, and despite the Italian retreat, the garrison fiercely defended the position, earning a Silver Medal of Military Valor. Besides its historical significance, the area also presents interesting naturalistic features, with woods and rock formations dating back 200 million years.

Route not recommended in summer months due to low altitude and high sun exposure. At the top of the fort pay attention to the dilapidated condition of the buildings and the exposure of the structure if you suffer from vertigo.
There are no water sources along the loop; on particularly hot days consider carrying an adequate amount of water.
The starting point of the route is the parking lot near the Interneppo saddle, reachable from Interneppo or Bordano.
Here there is a fork: to the right, the indication to Monte San Simeone, to the left the indication to Monte Festa. Take the military road to Monte Festa which crosses the western slopes of the heights. After traveling just over two kilometers, you intersect the CAI 838 trail ascending from Interneppo. At this point, you can choose to continue on the road or climb to the right following the CAI trail which, steeper, rises regularly crossing the military road. At 630 m there is the Tucjar viewpoint, the first panoramic point over the lake of the Three Municipalities below.
Continuing to ascend, you reach the plateau at 980 m where there are remains of some barracks and warehouses. Continuing briefly, you reach the Fort with its various structures to explore and the summit of Monte Festa (it is recommended to climb to the summit to enjoy the wide panorama).
The return can be done, as for the ascent, either on the military road or via the CAI 838 trail.
