Mount Festa, located in the Carnic Pre-Alps between Lake Cavazzo and the Tagliamento River, is home to a military fort built between 1910 and 1914, one of the most significant works of the Great War in Friuli Venezia Giulia. During the excursion, you can explore the history of the fort through information panels and visit the ruins of the barracks, battlement and ammunition depots. This fort, designed to reinforce Italy's eastern border, played a crucial role after the defeat at Caporetto, blocking the Austro-German advance thanks to the effective command of Captain Richard Noel Winderling. The fort had eight long-range guns, and despite the Italian retreat, the garrison strenuously defended the position, earning a Silver Medal for Military Valor. In addition to its historical significance, the area also has interesting naturalistic aspects, with forests and rock formations dating back 200 million years.
