THE REAL WORLD OF PETER GABRIEL is a tribute to the genius of the British singer and composer. The project was conceived and produced by the music group Up!, comprised of four musicians from Udine, who have always been devoted fans of Peter Gabriel.
From the outset, the group's goal was to interpret carefully selected songs from Peter Gabriel's discography with the utmost care and clarity, representing the various creative phases of his musical work:
1. the early quadrilogy (1977–1982) with the albums "Peter Gabriel I," "II," "III," and "IV";
2. the mature trilogy (1986–2002) with the albums "So," "Us," and "Up";
``` 3. The soundtracks (1985–2002) to the films "Birdy," "Passion," and "Long Walk Home," as well as to the stage show "Ovo";
4. The Memory Trilogy (2010–2023) comprising the albums "Scratch My Back," "New Blood," and "I/O."
THE REAL WORLD OF PETER GABRIEL presents a live performance featuring songs from Peter Gabriel's 50-year solo career (beginning after his departure from Genesis in 1975). The focus is particularly on the 1986 album "So," a commercially highly successful and sonically and musically profound work. Special emphasis is placed on reviving the innovative compositional elements that Gabriel introduced to pop-rock music, such as his exploration of African rhythms, ethnic sounds, layering, loops, and rhythmic patterns. The concert utilizes electronic and digital instruments that faithfully reproduce the diverse sounds of the artist's albums. He was among the first to employ drum machines, synthesizers, and sound effects that have since been widely imitated, such as gated reverb for percussion.
Peter Gabriel is considered a pioneer who introduced artists from around the world to a wider audience, combined his music with other art forms (visual arts, literature, etc.), and linked his poetics to themes from science and technology, sociology and psychoanalysis, human rights, and environmental protection.
These characteristics of Peter Gabriel's music inspired the idea of combining the musical performance with moments of communication, allowing the audience to participate in the artist's extraordinary journey and combining innovative musical languages with state-of-the-art electronic processing.
