Baba Sissoko comes from an illustrious dynasty of Malian griot musicians. He is a virtuoso of the tama (talking drums), the ngoni (a 4-string lute), the balafon (a type of marimba), and the calabash (percussion). He keeps the Malian musical tradition alive, while also enjoying collaborations with artists from different genres such as Habib Koité, Sting, Santana, Youssou N’Dour, Jovanotti, Salif Keita, and Aka Moon.
With the Mediterranean Blues ensemble, he dives into the exciting world of afrobeat, funk, and psychedelia.
Mediterranean Blues clearly reflects Baba Sissoko’s powerful and raw voice, the offbeat rhythm reminiscent of Afro-American music that (re)emerged from Jamaica, and the striking contribution of harmonicas that pour generous blues spices over the entire enchanting musical flow.
From concerts at Im Floss in Basel, Switzerland, to the Herzberg World Festival in Fulda and the Rudolstadt Festival in Germany; from WinterFuse in Antwerp, Belgium, to the Villa Session Blues Festival in Portugal; from Lugano Blues to Bop in Switzerland to the Jerry Ricks Festival in Croatia, Kaunas Blues in Lithuania, Santa Maria in the Azores; and Italian festivals such as Quarrata World Festival in Tuscany, Eco Jazz Fest in Calabria, and Dromos in Sardinia, as well as the Delifest World Music Festival—just to name a few—they have attracted and captivated audiences with an atmosphere of great enthusiasm and engagement.
