Udin&Jazz 2026: Mononeon

Description

MonoNeon is an American bassist and musician from Memphis. He is known for his hugely popular performances on YouTube and for being one of the last musicians to work with Prince. Dywane Thomas Jr. (his real name) won a Grammy Award for his contribution to Nas’s 2020 album King’s Disease.
Many artists are described as “prolific,” but MonoNeon (born Dywane Thomas Jr.) truly gives new meaning to the term. Since 2010, he has released 25 solo albums, while also running highly successful Instagram and YouTube channels. At the same time, he has collaborated with outstanding artists such as Prince, Mac Miller, Nas, Ne-Yo, and George Clinton, and he is also the bassist for the band Ghost-Note.
From avant-garde to southern soul to funk—and everything in between—MonoNeon’s extraordinary musical versatility, tone, and taste are always at the forefront.
His interest in music began during childhood in Memphis. His father, Dywane Thomas Sr., was and still is a highly sought-after bassist. His mother and grandmother were always listening to music at home or in church.
When he began playing bass, MonoNeon had an important mentor in his father, regularly performing with Dywane Thomas Sr.
“We immediately began to really appreciate each other. We didn’t have formal training; we just kept practicing, listening, and imitating,” his father recalls. “Later on, as I started to better understand what I was doing, I began adding effects—something bassists weren’t doing at the time. If you tell me to go right, I go left. That’s why I understand and support what he does. It’s his style.”
This creative inclination—further developed while attending the Berklee College of Music—also extends to the bright colors and elaborate quilted fabrics that make up his striking wardrobe. Inspired by experimental art movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism, MonoNeon’s work stands out for its strong visual as well as musical impact.
“I try to connect music with the visual arts,” he says. “There are aspects of Abstract Expressionism that I try to convey when I play. I don’t know exactly how to explain it—I just capture those things and apply them to music.”
