After its success in St. Peter’s Square, where it attracted over a million visitors during the Christmas holidays, the lagoon Nativity scene from Grado arrives in Gorizia to honor the European Capital of Culture.
Conceived by Antonio Boemo and designed by architect Andrea de Walderstein, the installation is the result of the work of 40 people from various local associations, led by the Bearers of Our Lady of Barbana.
Measuring 14 by 30 meters, the Nativity scene faithfully recreates a large reed hut (casone) hosting the Holy Family and around twenty finely detailed statues. It is set within an evocative lagoon landscape featuring water birds, traditional fishing equipment, and two batele—flat-bottomed boats—one carrying the Three Wise Men and the other a family of fishermen.
