Dmitri Shostakovich
Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70
Production: Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine
In collaboration with the Donato Renzetti Conducting Academy
This edition of NotaBene is devoted to Dmitri Shostakovich: a man who lived under the constant threat of a ruthless regime, an artist forced to navigate between compromise and freedom, knowing that a single misstep could cost him his life.
But who was Dmitri Shostakovich really? A loyal servant of Stalin, or a dissident concealed behind a mask of conformity? How did he survive in an age when composers, writers and artists could disappear for a single note, a single word or a single brushstroke deemed unacceptable? How much of that survival was courage, and how much surrender? How can one remain free when freedom itself may cost everything?
The answers lie hidden within the Symphony No. 9. Commissioned by Stalin to commemorate the Soviet victory in the Second World War, it was instead written by Shostakovich in a light-hearted, concise and almost mocking tone. A work that appeared harmless, yet was anything but. What message lies concealed beneath its score?
As in every NotaBene event, the audience will explore the score through live musical examples before listening to the complete symphony in the second part of the programme. This edition, presented for the first time with an additional performance dedicated to schools, offers a unique opportunity to discover the work from within. Ultimately, it will be Shostakovich's music itself that answers all our questions in the only way he knew how: without words, yet without ever telling a lie.
