A tribute to the quintessential classical ballet, more than one hundred and thirty years after its première at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, The Sleeping Beauty, set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, retains all the enchantment of its timeless fairy-tale world. In creating this regal and exquisitely refined ballet-féerie, Marius Petipa drew upon Charles Perrault’s celebrated tale to achieve the purest expression of classical ballet, placing technique, dramatic expression and choreographic craftsmanship at the very heart of the work. This production gains even greater distinction through the participation of the Ballet of the Tbilisi State Opera, led since 2004 by one of the greatest living legends of international dance, Nina Ananiashvili. Former prima ballerina assoluta of Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet and a celebrated principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre in New York, Ananiashvili has transformed the Georgian company, raising its artistic and technical standards and shaping it into an elite ensemble that now performs with distinction on many of the world's most prestigious stages, from London to New York.
