Ponterosso Trophy

Description

International canoe polo tournament. The event, which—true to tradition—will take place in the Ponterosso Canal, kicks off on Friday, September 19th, at 3:00 PM with the Under-14 Ponterosso Trophy. Athletes from Sicily and Liguria will be participating for the first time; alongside three teams of local young athletes, Canottieri Jonica, Arenzano, and Cus Udine will also compete.
On Saturday morning, September 20th, at 9:00 AM, matches for the Trophy will begin across the First Division (open category) and Second Division (Under-18, women's teams, and Serie B teams). Matches will run continuously at 35-minute intervals on two playing fields, concluding at 7:30 PM. On Sunday, September 22nd, matches will resume at 8:30 AM and end at 4:00 PM, with the First Division final taking place at 4:30 PM. Twenty teams will compete on Saturday and Sunday, representing a record six nations: Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. The reigning Italian champions (Canottieri Icnusa from Cagliari) will participate in the Ponterosso Trophy for the first time. Additionally, the waters of Trieste will host three athletes from Canoe Rovigo—Maddalena Lago, Veronica Mazzanti, and Chiara Trevisan—who finished fourth at the recent World Games in China. Now in its thirteenth edition and a staple of Trieste’s sporting calendar, the event aims to showcase and foster appreciation—both locally and beyond—for the unique aspects of canoe polo, a sport that shares similarities with water polo but is played in canoes. A new feature of the 2025 edition will be the addition of a second grandstand: alongside the "historic" stand by the main court, another will be set up next to the second court to provide greater visibility for youth teams and less experienced players.
