The silhouette of a woman, carrying within her the breath and colours of Collio/Brda, ready to soar along the paths of opera music while living in harmony with the landscape: this is the symbol of the 19th edition of the Piccolo Opera Festival, which in 2026 has chosen to celebrate the theme of “Freedom”, once again intertwining it with the artistic and natural heritage of a territory that has always reached beyond borders. The festival has also chosen as its inspirational figure the poet, intellectual, libertine and adventurer Lorenzo Da Ponte, who, like Giacomo Casanova, was connected to Gorizia through cultivated and aristocratic circles during the Age of Enlightenment.
Under the artistic direction of Gabriele Ribis, the festival will unfold through a packed programme of events from 18 June to 5 July, tracing the stages of a fascinating journey through music, history and contemporary sensibilities.
This year, no fewer than five opera productions will be presented at the Piccolo Opera Festival. Never before has the programme been so rich, featuring prestigious co-productions developed in synergy with artistic partners from France, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The programme embraces new compositions, the rediscovery of rarely performed works, and original reinterpretations of great masterpieces. It is a rich collection that explores the many shades of “freedom”: desired, denied, pursued and ultimately achieved.
