Description
Curated by Claudia Colecchia
On display is "La soglia" ("The Threshold") by Cristina Cosmano—winner of an international open call—which engages in a dialogue with portraits of women held in the Photo Archive of the Civic Museums of Trieste, exploring female identity through the medium of portraiture. It is a true intersection of gazes: Cristina Cosmano’s contemporary works converse directly with masterpieces by photographers from the 19th and 20th centuries—such as Giuseppe Wulz, Marion Wulz, Ugo Borsatti, Adriano de Rota, Emil Rabending, Carl Pietzner, and Giovanni Battista Berra—who captured women from diverse backgrounds, roles, and ages, ranging from Empress Sisi and the bread sellers of Servola to Japanese women depicted during a tea ceremony. Trieste Photo Days continues its long-standing collaboration with the Photo Archive of the Civic Museums of History and Art of the Municipality of Trieste. This partnership aims to foster a dialogue between contemporary photography and the archive’s collections, underscoring the importance of highlighting both the physical spaces and the historical holdings in the present day. The selection for the exhibition—designed to engage with the archive—is determined through an international open call, offering participants the opportunity to showcase their work within a museum setting, thanks to the museum’s collaboration.
