Photo Exhibitions at Covered Market (Mercato Coperto)

Description

For its 13th edition, the Trieste Photo Days festival reaffirms its role in revitalizing the Covered Market (Mercato Coperto), transforming it into a cultural hub where art intertwines with the daily lives of citizens. The space welcomes tourists and visitors alike, inviting them to explore a vital nexus of city life through an immersive and engaging experience.

Exhibition: "Urban Photographs: Trieste and Cities of the World"
Launching during the week of the Barcolana regatta, this major exhibition—featuring over 500 images drawn from the 17th edition of the URBAN Photo Awards—captures the everyday reality and multifaceted nature of urban life across the globe. It presents stories of life, people, architecture, public spaces, and the contrasts and transformations defining contemporary cities. Through a collection of images ranging from stark realism to more poetic and surprising perspectives, the exhibition reveals the complexity and energy of cities worldwide.

Exhibition: "Moving Mountains: Portraits of Contemporary Womanhood" by Marylise Vigneau
This exhibition brings together women photographed across diverse geographies, contexts, and life circumstances, creating a portrait of contemporary womanhood that is both fragmented and deeply interconnected. From dancers, volunteers, and artists to survivors, workers, mothers, and witnesses to their own times, each image represents an encounter between individual experience and the broader forces of history, conflict, memory, and resilience. The work invites reflection on how contemporary womanhood is perceived, experienced, and represented.

"Heim" – An Exhibition by Markus Born
This long-term photographic project was developed while living and traveling in Germany. The selection on display—nineteen black-and-white photographs—is a curated excerpt from a larger body of work, which is also slated for a book project scheduled for 2027. Combining documentary rigor with a focus on compositional inquiry, Born allows room for chance, constructing an associative, somber, and observant landscape that touches upon themes such as historical memory, migration, and the relationship with nature. The title itself, "heim," stops just short of "Heimat" (homeland, belonging), alluding to a return that is never fully realized.

"The Time Dreamed" – An Exhibition by Umberto Verdoliva
This project stems from the gap between the time we live and the time we desire. Through transit spaces, temporary rooms, and nights illuminated by artificial light, the artist seeks a form of permanence that daily life rarely affords. Here, simple gestures and the people we care for are not absences, but rather fragile, intermittent presences—existing in their fullest form only when one manages to pause and truly look at them. Passing landscapes, blurred faces, and lights glowing through the fog belong to an uncertain time, suspended between reality and imagination: not the time actually lived, but the time desired, cherished, and at times, merely grazed. Verdoliva has long pursued a path in humanist photography and was named "Author of the Year" by the FIAF (Italian Federation of Photographic Associations) in Caorle in 2023.

"Huellas" exhibition by Yinna Higuera
A project of great sensitivity and originality, it develops a poetic and material relationship between photography, memory, and nature through the use of chlorophyll printing on natural leaves. The quality of the work lies in its physical and organic dimension: the pieces do not function merely as images, but as living, fragile objects—intimately bound to the natural medium upon which they are created. This material component is central to the artist’s research and to the conceptual and aesthetic power of her work.
Opening hours: Monday: 8 am–2 pm; Tuesday–Saturday: 8 am–5 pm; Sunday: closed. Free admission.
