The Future Was Extracted Here by Marcel Van Beek
In
The Future Was Extracted Here, the artist explores the mining regions of Central Germany, examining the relationship between industry, memory, and environmental transformation. Through precise black-and-white imagery, Van Beek depicts a landscape where the legacy of coal persists alongside new ways of living and processes of energy transition. The project avoids a purely nostalgic or documentary approach, instead transforming the territory into a space for reflection on the connection between the progress of the past and the future that inherits its consequences. This contemporary exploration of landscape and societal change was selected by Claudia Colecchia—Head of the Library and Photo Archive at the Civic Museums of History and Art of the Municipality of Trieste—for the Patricia D. Richards Legacy Award 2026.
Opening hours: October 23–25: 10 am–8 pm. October 26–November 3: 10 am–1 pm and 5 pm–8 pm. Free admission.
