Kōdō is the Japanese ceremony of listening to incense (the act of appreciating incense is called “listening”). Precious aromatic woods – Byakudan (sandalwood) and Jinkoh (aloe wood) – are heated and in releasing their fragrances through the faint smoke that is produced, become an object of fascination and contemplation.
In Japan, this ceremony is considered one of the three classic arts of refinement, together with Ikebana floral composition and Chado for tea.
