The kimono – literally “thing to wear” – is an icon of Japanese culture: a traditional garment that continues to arouse curiosity and admiration, and is still emulated today in the fashion world. Its simple shape, cut and sewn from a long roll of fabric, is actually packed with extremely complex meanings which evolved together with Japanese history, culture and society. In this event we aim to offer a broad look at traditional Japanese costume through a theoretical introduction and an examination of the dressing ceremony.
