Gioachino Rossini's masterpiece, with its consistently fresh and winning comedy, is entrusted to a first-rate vocal and artistic cast. First performed in 1816, Gioachino Rossini's two-act opera The Barber of Seville, with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, arrives exactly thirty-four years after Giovanni Paisiello's eponymous composition, which was immediately met with great success. This was not the case for Rossini's version, which, upon its debut at the Teatro Argentina in Rome, was a resounding flop: the fault lies primarily with a biased audience, who boycotted the performance to avenge the outrage inflicted on Paisiello. Time, however, has proven Pesaro's genius and the splendor of his score right. With over two hundred years of history and as beloved today as it was then, this authentic masterpiece of comic opera is presented in the new production that will open the season at the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste. The direction, costumes, and sets are by one of the most prestigious living designers, Pier Luigi Pizzi, and the cast features Annalisa Stroppa as Rosina—who also starred in Cenerentola two seasons ago—and Alessandro Luongo as Figaro. Enrico Calesso conducts the orchestra and chorus of the Trieste opera house.
