The meeting offers an introduction to Chinese civilisation through some of its most representative cultural symbols. In particular, it will explore the meaning of the horse in Chinese culture, where it is associated with travel, freedom, strength and progress, as well as the significance of the Year of the Horse in the traditional Chinese calendar, linked to energy, dynamism and good fortune.
The historical role of the horse in Chinese art will also be examined, from representations dating back to the Han dynasty to the celebrated sancai ceramic horses of the Tang dynasty, which bear witness to the cultural and commercial exchanges that took place along the Silk Road.
The meeting will also introduce the subject of Chinese ceramics, one of the most important arts in the country’s tradition, with a particular focus on blue-and-white porcelain (qinghua), whose origins, decorative techniques and global diffusion will be outlined. It will highlight how both ceramics and silk travelled along the Silk Road, profoundly influencing the cultures of Asia and Europe, including Italy.
Workshop
In the second part of the activity, participants will take part in a clay modelling workshop. Guided by the facilitators, they will be introduced to the basic principles of hand-building in ceramics and will create small sculptures inspired by Chinese artistic tradition. In particular, they may model small horse figures inspired by the Tang dynasty or three-dimensional Chinese characters, transforming written signs into sculptural forms.
The aim of the workshop is to offer a practical experience through which participants can explore the relationship between art, symbol and material in Chinese artistic tradition.
