Archaeology, natural sciences and contemporary art come together on 12 October in Grado at the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology of the Upper Adriatic, an exhibition born out of a collaboration between the WWF Foundation – Miramare Marine Protected Area and the Miramare Castle Historical Museum and Park – Regional Directorate of National Museums of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The ‘Profondo presente’ project brings together two ‘giants’ of the Upper Adriatic: the Roman ship Iulia Felix, on display on the first floor of the museum, and the whale Boralena, whose skeleton is being presented in its entirety to the public for the first time. The exhibition, characterised by evocative immersive effects and enriched with multimedia content, expands the museum’s visitor experience with new content dedicated to the sea and the species that inhabit it, highlighting how underwater research is interdisciplinary and represents an extraordinary field of study for learning about our past and understanding the transformations currently taking place in the marine ecosystem.
The Iulia Felix bears witness to the presence of humans in the Northern Adriatic in the past; Boralena tells the story of life in the sea and its transformations in the present. The site-specific art installation ‘Blue Life’, created for the museum by the artist Elisabetta Milan, introduces the exhibition itinerary, inviting us to view the sea through the lens of time and to reflect on our responsibility to protect it.
To mark the opening, on 12 October the museum will be open to the public on an exceptional basis from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm, with last admission at 5.30 pm.
