The Istrian-Venetian town of Muggia is ready to welcome the thousands of visitors and masked performers who will fill its alleys and squares during the most colourful and joyful week of the year. The Muggia Carnival, one of the oldest and most fascinating in Northeast Italy, offers a rich programme of events, featuring daily shows, traditional celebrations and opportunities for direct participation.
The seven days of festivities are framed by two symbolic events: the ancient “Ballo della Verdura”, during which the keys of the city are handed to the Carnival King, and the traditional funeral of Carnival. These rituals embody the essence of a unique celebration that blends history, folklore and entertainment.
The most eagerly awaited moment will take place on Sunday, 15 February at 1:00 PM with the spectacular parade of allegorical floats. The eight historic Companies – Bellezze Naturali, Bulli e Pupe, Bora, Brivido, Lampo, Mandrioi, Ongia and Trottola – will march through the streets of the town, reviving the timeless magic of the Muggia Carnival. Over 2,000 participants, accompanied by 9 bands and around thirty magnificent floats equipped with complex mechanical systems, will transform the town into an open-air theatre. This extraordinary show is the result of a full year of dedication by skilled artisans and volunteer technicians.
The Muggia Carnival is not just the expression of an ancient popular tradition, but a true reflection of the Muggesani spirit—people who devote passion, time and energy to give their town a magical week. An atmosphere that permeates every corner of Muggia—and one that will surely enchant every visitor.
