Once again, the Soča River, with its emerald-green waters and meandering bends, is at the heart of this first part of the second stage. An ascent to the sources of the river which does not stop there but continues through mountain passes and routes that allow you to see the remains of the rears and areas which were the more distant from the Front line. These areas, nevertheless, were essential for providing all the necessary supplies to the troops fighting at the front.
Author’s recommendation
A visit to the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Trenta and the Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden is recommended.
Nearby are the gorges of the Mlinarica River and the monument to Julius Kugy. A very popular spot is also the source of the Soča River.
The remains of a cable car dating from the time of the Great War stand below the Šupca viewpoint.
Two cemeteries of Russian prisoners of war are located below Vršič (next to and at the height of the Erjavčeva koča mountain hut).
