It is once again the beauty of the Triglavski Narodni Park that provides the setting for this stage, which leads hikers on the discovery of some important sites of the Great War, all the while being surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. A unique and extremely interesting landmark on this route is the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca, a small pearl of art and a monument to peace in the spirit of multiculturalism, which has now been awarded the European Heritage Label. Within its walls, the church has welcomed soldiers of different faiths, united at the time of its construction (1916) by their common affiliation to the Austro-Hungarian ranks. The itinerary ends at one of the sites that gained notoriety during the First World War: Tolmin.
Author’s recommendation
From Polog, you can take a circular route leading to WWI-era bunkers, the former Austro-Hungarian cemetery, Polog Alp, and down to the Tolminka River, which you cross via the kurukula bridge. From here, continue to the river's source before returning to the starting point.
A visit to Zatolmin is also recommended, where the private Mrzli Vrh Collection is located.
In Tolmin, be sure to visit the Tolmin Museum.
